Dell 500
Numerous analytical agencies have forecast the breaking point at PC market: the number of portable computers sold worldwide will exceed that of desktop analogues. The first sign of such democratization of laptops is the release of ultra portable Eee PC 900 by Asus. Small size, and what is essential a low price of less than 500$, made this sub-laptop extremely popular. Its emergence gave birth to a whole new sector of netbooks. Even a slow performance of such devices does not stop people from chasing a low price therefore each self-respecting manufacturer of mobile PCs considered it necessary to release its own equivalent of mini-micro-nano-ultra-sub-laptop.

Just in the full pride of this boom Dell, the world’s second provider of electronic and computing equipment announced the output of model with 500 index having dedicated the release to the launch of new PC factory in India. Many even before the official announcement believed that Dell will release a sub-laptop to become the main rival of Eee PC 900 on the market. Even the model #500 was used as comparison to 900-series to state it is ‘lesser, cheaper’. But eventually the laptop turned out to be a full-scale 15.4-inch version first of all aimed at developing markets of South-East Asia and China. The model’s price range varied from 500 to 600 US dollars depending on configuration thus fitting well enough into the price niche created by netbooks. Price competition is obvious regardless of more than twofold difference both in weight and size.
